I went there last year

So I was "hired" to be a screener for one of my film classes (basically I set up the projector and press play on all the movies and get $100 when the quarter is over). After class when I was turning off all the equipment I asked if anyone was going to be on the Beijing program this summer. Nobody in that class is going (and to be honest I felt super awkward asking but whatever), but there was one girl who said that she had gone last year. I picked her brain about it after class.

She said that it might be sort of difficult for me to be a vegetarian there. I think that I am still going to try, but I don't think I'll be able to communicate well enough to be very strict about it. I will not eat red meat or poultry, though. I think I'd get sick if I tried, it's been so long. I'll eat fish though, and I probably will not ask if they cooked what they're serving me in any meat oils. I don't even know how to say meat or oils in Chinese. I only know how to say vegetarian.

Which brings me to my next point... the girl I spoke to about the trip said that the most difficult part about the trip was the fact that she did not speak any Chinese. She said she didn't go anywhere without someone who spoke Chinese with her. That is kind of difficult for me... I'm thinking about getting something like Rosetta Stone so I can at least have a little basis for it. Like I told my Mom, I don't want to accidentally agree to have my organs harvested. Or something.

She also said that the program was extremely intense, and that you were in school from 9am-6pm, daily. I'm okay with that, though. I'd rather be in school all day than putting away clothes and giving people "fashion" advice at your friendly local tacky clothing corporate retail chain. ANYHOW, only two and a half months until I leave. For China. HOLY CRAP

p.s. I submitted my application for the Berlin program last night. I find out in two weeks, I think. Wish me luck! Although since I was one of the earliest to open the application I think I have a pretty good chance at getting in. At least, that's what they told me.

achoo!

The China trip was confirmed today, and if I didn't have to leave for work in half an hour I'd be booking my flight right now. I've been stalking the Air Canada website for a while now. A month ago flights were $1800. Two weeks ago they were $800. Now they're hovering around $1100.

My Mom is going to lose her shit when I go, I'm so excited.
